MALAWI: FLOODING - UPDATE

Malawi: Flooding, March 2019

Expressing our solidarity with the people of Malawi and other countries affected and the impact on our work and our continued commitment to the region.

The Brewgooder Foundation has received updates from both of our delivery partners regarding the catastrophic floods that have hit the Southern and Central areas of Malawi over the last two weeks. Heavy rains began during mid-February and intensified into Tropical Storm Idai which resulted in massive rainfalls between 5-7th March; building into wide-scale flooding peaking on March 11th.

Nearly 1,000,000 people in Southern Malawi are internally displaced. Many areas in the southern areas of the country are flooded. These include the following Districts: Thyolo, Blantyre, Chikwawa, Mwanza, Machinga, Zomba, Dedza, Balaka, Mulanje, Nsanje, Chiradzulu, Phalombe, Neno and Mangochi.

Flood Conditions 7th March 2019 (Above) and Impact 11th March 2019

All teams from the Strathclyde Water Programme & Climate Justice Fund (CJF) who have been working on the 12 sites in need of rehabilitation and in relation to our Jingle Wells crowdfund campaign have had to temporarily halt work until access was deemed again safe. They have had to pause works due to lack of road access so cannot deliver materials to site; not advisable to cast cement & brick structures in heavy rain which would potentially compromise long term strength.

The CJF has reported that things are slowly beginning to settle down in the region and in some areas returning to normal. Fortunately, the 12 site areas were only affected by localised flooding and site crews have managed to return within the last 3 days to assess further damage. The localised flooding still resulted in communities being cut off for about one week, but roads are starting to dry back up and should be accessible this week.

We would like to express our solidarity with the people of Malawi and also Zimbabwe and Mozambique who have been affected by the devastation caused by Cyclone Idai. We are committed to providing sustainable access for communities within this region and will provide another update on the progress of Jingle Wells in due course.

From all of the team at Brewgooder.
